I have a bit more insight into this thanks to speaking to Icelandair at trade events.
EDI has been on the cards for at least the last 2 years, the exact quote to me was "a second Scottish airport is being considered"
History may well repeat itself, but Glasgow was just expanded in terms of frequency for this winter, and as it stands just now EDI has said their flights will operate September-April
AviAlliance has only been in 5 months, and is spending £350 million on expansion and improvements, you don't invest that money without commitment for airlines to provide capacity
Route development is like a marathon. It takes a long time to get to the finish line.
It’s been over a decade when we first caught up with Andrés Jónsson and presented the opportunity for #Icelandair to enter the #Edinburgh market.
Today brings us closer to the finish line. Thank you Snorri Tomasson, Kolbrun Birna Bjarnadottir, Mark Johnson, Andrés Jónsson and the rest of the Icelandair team for this fantastic news. It’s great to have you on board!
What excites me about this route is the ability to combine two destinations for the price of one. The well-developed Icelandair’s Stopover program enables you to visit Disneyland in Orlando and experience northern lights gazing in Iceland in one trip and at no additional airfare!
You just know Dewar is badgering the likes of Emirates to follow the US airlines by moving east lock and stock and the airlines have shown themselves to be sheep so I wouldn't dare bet against it.
Are Icelandair looking at grasping some of the EDI to USA/Canada market and ‘testing the water’ for the winter when EDI transatlantic flights are minimal. If successful they may do winter only flights to capture the market during that season. Also gives the aircraft something to do rather than sunshine ‘summer’ flights to Europe.

Just my thoughts

Looks more like they are taking on easyJet for point to point tourists to me.

Timed perfectly for transatlantic connections
They would be because that’s how their fleet operate. But these seem scheduled perfectly for city break tourists.
